YouGov poll: The Michigan governor’s race between Republican John James and Democrat Jocelyn Benson is now a statistical tie!
Benson’s lead has been completely erased. John James is poised to become Michigan’s first Black governor.
1.34 million ballots have already been cast: (Dem: 53.6%, Ind: 27.2%, GOP: 19.2%)
In 2020, roughly 99% of early and mail-in ballots went to Democrats. That meant if the GOP lead on Election Day wasn’t massive, the early-vote “blue wave” would often flip the results afterward.
Since then—and especially after 2024—Republicans and independents have cut that overwhelming Democratic early-vote share down to roughly 50–60%.
Republicans typically win on Election Day. With the early vote reduced from 99% blue to about 53%, a sudden post-Election Day flip is much less likely.
